Rodenbach Grand Cru

Hey there, craft beer lovers and curious palates! Here at Olde Sonoma Public House, we're always on the hunt for exceptional brews to share with our community. And let me tell you, we've found a true gem that's steeped in history and flavor: the Rodenbach Grand Cru.

If you're a fan of sour ales, or even if you're just dipping your toes into the tart and tangy world of Flanders Red Ales, you absolutely have to experience this beer. The Rodenbach Grand Cru is often hailed as "the Burgundy of Belgium" for a good reason – its complexity, depth, and vibrant character are truly something special.

So, what makes it so grand?

  • Aged to Perfection: Rodenbach Grand Cru is a masterful blend of one-third young beer and two-thirds beer that has been aged for two years in giant oak barrels, known as "foeders". This lengthy maturation process in oak is where the magic happens, developing its distinctive sour, sweet, and fruity notes.

  • A Symphony of Flavors: Expect a delightful dance on your tongue! You'll find aromas and tastes of cherry, fig, red berries, and even a hint of balsamic vinegar. It's refreshingly tart, with a balanced malty sweetness and a dry, lingering finish that will leave you wanting more.

  • A Benchmark of Style: This isn't just any sour ale; it's considered a benchmark for the Flemish sour ale style. Esteemed beer journalist Michael Jackson (the beer writer, not the King of Pop!) even called it "the most refreshing beer in the world". High praise indeed!

The Legacy Behind the Lager: Rodenbach Brewery

The story of Rodenbach is as rich and complex as its beers. This legendary brewery was founded in 1821 in Roeselare, Belgium, by the four Rodenbach brothers. Over two centuries, it has earned its status as one of the most revered breweries globally and is recognized by Belgium as a National Treasure.

What truly sets Rodenbach apart is its commitment to tradition and innovation, largely thanks to Eugène Rodenbach who, after studying brewing in England, brought back the art of maturing beer in oak barrels and blending old and young beers. Today, the Rodenbach brewery boasts the largest collection of wood-aged beer in the world, with 294 oak foeders, some of which are 150 years old and protected as industrial heritage.

If you're ever in Belgium, you can even visit the brewery in Roeselare and see some of these impressive foeders for yourself. You can learn more about their incredible history and beers at Rodenbach's official website

Come on down to Olde Sonoma Public House and experience the Rodenbach Grand Cru for yourself. It’s more than just a beer; it’s a taste of history!
